Altrusa is an international non-profit organization making our local communities better through leadership, partnership, and service. Our club offers an opportunity to make a real difference in the greater Gainesville, Florida area . We undertake a variety of service, literacy, fundraising and international projects each year. We are seeking new volunteers to join our organization and make a difference. Our members are from varying occupations and lifestyles, all sharing an interest in community service and enjoying the friendship, fun and satisfaction that comes from working together for the benefit of others. Altrusa House is considered our signature project. Fundraising for the Altrusa House of Gainesville started with Altrusa International of Gainesville over an eight-year planning period. Thanks to Altrusa International, the City of Gainesville, and the Gainesville community, Altrusa House of Gainesville was able to raise more than $400,000 and acquire the land required to build the facility. Altrusa House of Gainesville opened in October 1998, built upon the land donated by the City of Gainesville, alongside Greentree Park. Altrusa International of Gainesville and the Gainesville community continue to provide support for member sponsorship, volunteers, equipment, and specialized support. Altrusa House is a licensed adult day health care program that provides a safe and stimulating environment for adults with disabilities or special needs. Literacy Altrusa International of Gainesville has selected Terwilliger Elementary as the Literacy focus for the 2019-20 year. Members will assist students in many areas such as Reading Pals, volunteering in classrooms, books fairs, etc. Altrusa also gives each honor roll student a book at the end of the year. At the middle school level, an award is presented to an 8th grader, selected by their teachers, who has showed the greatest improvement in reading. Trading Closets Trading Closets will be held April 4-5, 2020 at the Gainesville Woman's Club. 'Trading Closets' can be considered the signature fundraiser of the Gainesville Club. It is defined as an 'upscale resale' event. Donations of women's clothing are collected for several months and then the sale is held. Guests return year after year to look for wonderful bargains. Friday night is a ticketed event. Hors d'oeuvres, wine and non-alcoholic beverages, and a silent auction are part of the festivities. Proceeds from the event support Altrusa House as well as other community projects. Unsold clothing is distributed to local agencies such as Peaceful paths, a shelter for victims of domestic abuse; Tacachale, a residential community for those with mental disabilities. Evening wear is donated to local high schools for Prom wear. The University of Florida interview closet receives women's professional business outfits. Learn More Yard Sale The Vocation Committee holds an annual yard sale, usually in the fall.Proceeds from the yard sale benefit programs such as Displaced Homemakers at Santa Fe College and Her House of Hope among other local programs.
